Or at least that’s what some have called it. If you have noticed your connection lagging or even failing to bridge over the past week or so – it is probably due to a prolonged grudge against SpamHaus held by Cyber Bunker, a Dutch company that, according to its website, hosts “services to any Website ‘except child pornography and anything related to terrorism’”.

Due to the nature of the content stored and hosted by CyberBunker – SpamHaus (an international organisation, founded in 1998 to track e-mail spammers and spam-related activity) recently added CyberBunker to their server blacklist – therefore blacklisting the hosting company from any server operating the Spamhaus blacklist. This due to the reputation of SpamHaus – is a lot!

The people over at Cyberbunker, have seemingly taken the matter into their own hands. There have been a series of DdoS (Denial of Service) attacks on the Spamhaus servers peaking 300GB/s. A Denial of Service attack is when one server sends huge amounts of useless data packets to another in an attempt to neutralize it and stop it from gaining access to the internet. In order for this to be successful – the amount of data sent has to be sufficient enough that the server on the other end is processing above its capacity, thus slowing down the connection and eventually grinding to a halt.

Since all this data is floating through cyberspace, it could unfortunately become intertwined with your data and slow its journey. Therefore, your internet connection could become affected by the current state of affairs. Unfortunately at the current time, there isn’t a huge amount that can be done without being in front of the culprit server.

Please leave a comment below with your views on what could be the Biggest Cyber Attack in History.

What is Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a palm sized computer that plugs into your TV with a keyboard and mouse. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the day to day tasks that your home PC would normally do – EXCEPT, it’s the price of a couple of cinema tickets. This little beauty can also play high-definition video!

Where did the idea come from?

The idea behind a computer so cheap and tiny came in 2006, when Eben Upton and his colleagues at the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory became concerned about the year-on-year decline in the numbers and skills levels of the A-level students applying to read Computer Science in each academic year. From a situation in the 1990s where most of the kids applying were coming to interview as experienced hobbyist programmers, the landscape in the 2000s was very different; a typical applicant might only have done a little web design.

Specifications

512MB @ 700MHz

2x USB Port

RCA Video

3.5mm Audio

LAN Input

Audio Output

What do we think?

At around £25 the Raspberry PI is an excellent buy for many reasons:

It allows younger users to gain essential programming experience where they wouldn’t usually due to the high chance of “bricking” their more expensive computer systems

The Raspberry PI has a substantial level of performance and is capable of a HD output upto 1920x 1200 – all on a single board.

Its extremely cheap!

So that’s our input, what do you think about the Raspberry PI Micro Computer?
Feel free to leave a reply below

In collaboration with Mark Haddon Ltd we have delivered a website which is fresh and up-to-date, designed to suit the needs of our customers.

The External website is designed to better reflect the mission and purpose of SCURL as a professional library organisation which provides a high quality service to its members. The site is primarily designed to showcase the work of SCURL on behalf of its members, so as to raise the profile of the organisation and encourage a broader external audience.

There is also a members website which has a secure log in for SCURL members to enable better communication and collaboration between members by providing a blog-style content area open to all members and a library of documents relevant to their specific groups. The log-in facility recognises a visitor’s status, only allowing them to have access to content which is relevant to their specific interests.

The website was moved to a WordPress content management system which allows us to integrate the custom made design templates and also offers a wide range of plugins making further development to the website straightforward. With a large amount of documents needing stored, WordPress offers an archiving facility which is searchable ensuring that the users can find the item required quickly.

We provided a full training session for SCURL’s administrators as well as a training manual which allows them to upload and changes their content frequently, keeping the website up-to-date. SCURL has indicated the success of the website with all of their stakeholders and we hope that they find this new website a successful promotional tool.

Over the course of this year we have noticed that our WordPress clients have needed help in managing the standard software updates and as a result we have developed this new package.

We understand that when clients are managing their own website, WordPress can often ask for updates, similar to those which are prompted by other programs they may frequently run, which can often cause problems depending upon the individual complexities of their website.

In the past we have offered to perform WordPress updates manually on behalf of clients, which depending upon the frequency of the updates can be quite costly. Our new service provides the best of both as it’s an automated system which is frequently backed up by our web development team who also test any new updates which are offered to WordPress clients’ offline to ensure that they are compatible with various plugins.

With our new WordPress maintenance package we will be able to test your website offline to check whether it is compatible with new software that is offered prior to launching them on the live website. For any problems that may occur if the relevant updates are implemented we will be able to offer a consultancy service that provides advice and an action plan of how to go forward, if you wish to go no further then we can rollback your website to its previous state in the older version from the backed up data.

If you would like to take advantage of this new package and feel secure knowing that one of our web developers is monitoring your site then please contact us on 0131 230 0130 or send us an email.

We helped him to develop a website which portrays his methods, using a module based learning methods, including self assessments at the end of each module.

His website engages a wide audience from the Far East as well as business schools within the UK. http://jmcc-lean.com.

We developed the website on a WordPress platform, allowing us to develop on existing plugins giving him the bespoke website that he required.

This website draws a customer in and has many features hidden behind the external website which are revealed to a visitor once they have registered. Once registered a user is given another level of access where they can access samples of his course and the integrated PayPal and purchase functionality allows them to purchase the course content. The course content is protected by a security software which prevents users from sharing the course with friends. Once making a purchase a user also gets access to more content which allows them to ask Jim a question and do self assessments which are built into the website to help them through their course.

The old platform had become dated and was not keeping up with their increased needs for frequent changes of content and images throughout the website. The newer release of the drupal platform allows them to better manage their own website by changes elements of the header files, content and images.

Whilst upgrading to the new platform we were able to update Powerleague’s design giving them a cleaner look which made the navigation for visitors much simpler. The blocks within the website gives a simpler website structure and the super-footer includes more data within each page, highlighting the more popular pages to a user.

Private House Stays have generated an online cooperative of varying types of accommodation, food and beverage venues and activities which are based throughout Scotland. They provide basic information with price ratings allowing customers to book online and make general enquiries.

After taking over the site management a few years prior, we drew up a suggested proposal for improvement to add value to the product for the client by giving it a more structured format ensuring it was easy to navigate for customers.

The entire website was shifted onto a PHP framework where the administration and database areas had to be rebuilt from scratch. Luckily we were able to transfer the majority of the public site easily as coding had been previously rationalised.

After accepting the proposed project the site owners saw the benefits and capabilities that the new site would create e.g. using maps to pinpoint the exact location of a chosen venue, the ability to print relevant financial reports and extend the amount of information storable in the secure client database.

The new site now gives a more engaging service that entices customers through its eye catching designs and layout.
